Shooting at a Westbury birthday party sends 6 people to the hospital, Long Island cops say – NBC New York

A party celebrating a teenager's 18th birthday ended in gunfire, sending six people to the hospital on Long Island.

Police in Nassau County said the shooting began before 11 p.m. Friday at a home at Eastfield and Pepperidge streets in Westbury.

“The parents were there, it wasn’t a house party,” said a young witness. “It was literally a birthday party!”

“Suddenly you hear a fire cracker and then just shots – everyone is running, running. I got injured in the whole running incident,” said another witness after the commotion.

Responding officers found six people with various gunshot wounds, all of whom had to be transported to nearby hospitals. All were expected to recover.

Some of the teens who spoke after the incident said they didn't see the shooter and couldn't imagine why anyone would bring a gun to a teen party.

“The boy hosting the party feels bad. He didn't want anyone to get hurt in this situation, it should never have happened,” the teenager said.

Nassau County police sent investigators from their gang investigation team to search the crime scene and interview witnesses.

Neighbors like Naved Ahmed are unsettled that gun violence has somehow found its way into this quiet neighborhood.

“Safety is obviously a top priority, especially when you pay so much property tax where you live,” Ahmed said.
