Driver intentionally runs over Santaquin police officer, killing him; According to police, the driver is still at large

SANTAQUIN — A Santaquin police officer was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer early Sunday.

The officer was killed while assisting on a call. It turned out to be a “suspicious” call and the driver hit the officer, killing him, Santaquin police Lt. Mike Wall said.

Investigators are still trying to determine the nature of the original call.

Police continue to search for the driver with the help of other law enforcement agencies in the Valley.

Due to the police response, I-15 was closed in both directions at South Payson.

“Devastating news from our law enforcement this morning. Please pray for this officer's family. Our hearts are broken and we forever thank everyone who protects and serves them,” Gov. Spencer Cox wrote on X.

Residents reported communities, including parts of Payson, were advised to “shelter in place” while police searched for the driver.

No further information was immediately available.
