Governor Newsom declares 2024 Wildfire Preparedness Week

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring May 5-11, 2024, “Wildfire Preparedness Week.”

The text of the proclamation and a copy can be found below:

California and much of the West are experiencing more difficult wildfire seasons due to increasing climate impacts. With our state on the front lines of this growing threat, my administration is taking unprecedented action to make our communities more resilient to wildfires and improve forest health.

Over the past five years, we have advanced historic investments to improve forest management and other projects that reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, fund robust emergency response efforts, and acquire state-of-the-art firefighting equipment and technology. Thanks in part to these efforts, as well as improved weather conditions, far fewer buildings were destroyed in California last year compared to previous years.

CAL FIRE has also made significant progress in fuel reduction and abatement, treating more than 105,500 acres of fuels last year. Fuel reduction projects are critical to slowing and reducing the intensity of wildfires and provide areas from which firefighters can safely and vigorously combat fires. Developing and sustaining these vital projects across the state will continue to be a focus to keep our communities safe.

The theme of this year's Wildfire Preparedness Week, Mission Implementation through Partnerships, emphasizes the importance of collaboration and collective responsibility in reducing and managing wildfire risk. Californians can make their neighborhoods safer by creating defensible spaces around homes, making homes more resilient, developing wildfire action plans, and joining forces to join Fire Safe Councils and Firewise Communities that work to regularly assess wildfire risk and response to prioritize them to combat them.

We all play an essential role in protecting ourselves, our loved ones and communities from wildfires. During Wildfire Preparedness Week, I encourage all Californians to visit to learn more about the steps we can take to prepare for wildfire season and prevent loss of life and property. Together we can create a more fire-resilient California.

THEREFORE, I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, hereby proclaim May 5-11, 2024, “Wildfire Preparedness Week.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereby caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed on May 1, 2024.

Governor of California
