Governor Newsom proclaims Jewish American Heritage Month 2024

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring May 2024 as Jewish American Heritage Month.

The text of the proclamation and a copy can be found below:

Throughout our history, generations of Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution have sought the promise of freedom and the opportunity to start a new life in America. California is home to the second largest Jewish population in the United States, with thriving communities in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and other parts of the state. This month, we celebrate the enduring faith, perseverance and resilience of the Jewish people and highlight the many ways in which Jewish Americans enrich our culture, politics, civil society and countless other areas.

As we celebrate these achievements, we must also acknowledge the bigotry and violence that Jews have faced throughout history and which shamefully continues today. Amid brazen displays of anti-Semitic hatred, California is taking action to protect our communities and ensure that future generations never forget the lessons of the past, including the deliberate murder of approximately six million European Jews during the Holocaust.

Working with the Jewish Caucus and other legislative leaders, my administration has advanced major investments to increase security in houses of worship and other vulnerable cultural centers, funded anti-hate programs that combat intolerance and support victims, and the CA vs. Hate Resource Line and Network nationwide to provide victims and witnesses of hate crimes with a safe, anonymous reporting option.

We have tapped leading experts to lead our Commission on the State of Hate and the Council on Holocaust and Genocide Awareness – an important tool to address young people's shocking loss of awareness of the horrors of the Holocaust. And we released California's first-ever plan to combat anti-Semitism in all its forms statewide.

California will continue to lead the fight to combat racial, ethnic and religious hatred in our society with education and empathy. This Jewish American Heritage Month, let us pay tribute to the diverse contributions of the Jewish people to our California history and celebrate our shared commitment to pluralism, cultural diversity and religious freedom.

THEREFORE, I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, hereby proclaim May 2024 as Jewish American Heritage Month.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereby caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed on May 5, 2024.

Governor of California
