NFL executive backs Spencer Rattler

South Carolina football Spencer Rattler was selected in the 5th round of the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints last week. It was a later-than-expected selection for the former Gamecock quarterback, but he ended up in a good situation that gave him the opportunity to sit and learn behind veteran Derek Carr and the opportunity to play early like it The organization and the fan base seem to be united on the verge of leaving Carr.

While Rattler fell through the draft, some reporters (most notably ESPN's Pete Thamel) argued that his high school appearance was in the Netflix documentary QB1 was an important reason for his downfall. It was probably an exaggerated report aimed at getting ratings for the show and social media clicks, because anyone who's been paying attention knows that the documentary (from when Rattler was 17) isn't accurate reflects who he is today.

Several prominent names have spoken out in support of Spencer Rattler and denounced the report QB1 significantly damaged his draft stock. South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and a large number of media members around the football world quickly came to Rattler's defense by speaking about their personal interactions with the Saints' new quarterback.

After the dust around the draft settled somewhat, an anonymous NFL executive joined the fray. According to a report by Mike Sando of The athlete That was in his post-draft breakdown, that's what an NFL executive told him QB1 didn't help Rattler, but the idea that it was a major deterrent to teams recruiting him was inaccurate because “he's matured” and is a “really coachable” player.

The narrative surrounding Rattler is boring (it started almost seven years ago), and there have been no issues with his character or maturity in recent years. Hopefully, the public defense of South Carolina's football all-time leader in graduation percentage (he would have more records, but he was only at Columbia for two seasons) will go a long way toward dismantling the narrative once and for all.
