2 blood drives will be held in May in Bureau County – Shaw Local

American Red Cross blood drives are scheduled for Monday, May 20, in Spring Valley and Wednesday, May 22, in Ohio, Illinois.

The Spring Valley blood drive will be held from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at John F. Kennedy Elementary School, 800 N. Richards St. and the Ohio blood drive will be from 1 to 6 p.m. at Ohio High School, 103 S .Memorial St.

When every second counts, blood products can provide life-saving help. The American Red Cross is asking the public to donate blood or platelets during Trauma Awareness Month in May to keep hospitals prepared for all transfusion needs, including emergencies. Type O blood donors and donors who donate platelets are particularly needed at the moment: type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room staff resort to when, in the most serious situation, there is no time to determine a patient's blood type ; Type O-positive blood is the most commonly used blood type because it can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type. When bleeding is severe, platelets are often needed to help blood clot.

It is the blood that is already on the shelves and can save lives in an emergency. Book a donation appointment by visiting, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Everyone who comes to donate from April 29th to May 31st will receive a coupon from Sport Clips Haircuts via email for a free haircut.
