Chabad of Tallahassee is raising funds for relief efforts after tornadoes that ripped through the city Friday morning, leaving extensive damage – downed trees, tangled power lines and buildings with roofs torn off – caused property damage and financial loss.

The violent storms struck amid the morning rush of students to school. As a result, schools across the city were closed and a woman tragically died when a tree crashed into her home.

Given the type and amount of damage hurricanes cause, the City of Tallahassee expects it will take “some time” to reconnect an estimated 80,000 people to power.

rabbi Shneur Oirechmanwho runs Chabad of The Panhandle in Tallahassee with his wife ChanieHe has just returned from Israel where he sat Shiva for his mother, Mrs. Ilana Oirechman OBM. He stopped at the Rebbe's Ohel at the exact time of the storm, he told COLlive.

“These are the worst tornadoes Tallahassee has ever seen,” Rabbi Oirechman said. “There was extensive damage near our Chabad center and home, including a tree that fell right next to our home, miraculously narrowly missing him,” he said.

“It was a great miracle, we had people right near our house at that time and one student was spared by just a few centimeters,” said Rabbi Oirechman.

The entire area, including the Chabad Center, is still without power, and Rabbi Oirechman reports that they were unable to obtain a generator before Shabbat, so they suffered thousands of dollars in loss of perishable food alone.

The center provided many people with food and emergency aid despite the damage they suffered.

Chabad of Tallahassee is also collecting donations to repair the severe property damage and cleanup efforts.
