Tallahassee Community College plans to reopen Tuesday after tornadoes

Tallahassee Community College plans to return to normal operations Tuesday as it continues to recover from two tornadoes that devastated the capital several days ago, causing severe damage.

According to a TCC spokesperson, the announcement comes after power was restored to the college campus late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

At the same time, TCC officials are monitoring a new storm threat, with multiple severe weather events expected Monday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

“Thank you to our Facilities and Information Technology staff, campus police, Florida Public Safety Institute recruits and many community partners who worked throughout the weekend on severe weather cleanup and repairs and continue to do so today.” said TCC in a statement on Monday.

Numerous trees on TCC's main campus were destroyed and several buildings were also severely affected – including the workforce development building and the college's technology and career programs building.

The National Weather Service's description of the Tallahassee tornado path shows that the first EF-2 tornado on Friday – which had winds of 115 mph – moved across Pat Thomas Boulevard and caused significant tree damage on campus property from TCC and Lively Technical College before crossing Appleyard Drive.

Roof damage is among the most important repairs that need to be made while TCC's main campus continues to be investigated, according to a TCC spokesperson.

The college's statement continued: “The safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus facilities remains our top priority.” We appreciate your patience as we make every effort to reopen our campus as quickly and safely as possible to reopen.” TCC will provide updates and additional information to its students, faculty and staff through its alert system at
