How Spirit AeroSystems Fits Into Boeing's Plan for Recovery – NBC New York

Boeing has tried for years to get back on track after two fatal 737 Max 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019, but the company continued to face problems with production defects and setbacks, including a door jam that came out of a 737 Max in the mid-20th century 9 plane flew. The iconic company, which once had a reputation for safety, is losing market share to rival Airbus, which has delivered more planes and received more orders than Boeing for five years in a row.

Some airlines are scaling back their growth plans due to production delays.

The pressure on Boeing has led to a major change in leadership. And to address manufacturing defects and restart production, the company announced talks to buy fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems – a company that Boeing spun off in 2005.

Spirit AeroSystems, not to be confused with Spirit Airlines, is one of the largest aviation companies in the world with numerous locations around the globe. The company produces components for commercial and military aircraft, including, among other things, fuselages and wing elements.

“Boeing is by far their largest customer,” said Kevin Michaels, managing director of AeroDynamic Advisory. “Spirit supplies 100% of the fuselages for the world’s second most popular aircraft, the 737.”

In recent years, the Spirit AeroSystems factory has experienced a series of manufacturing defects on some fuselages going to Boeing.

However, Spirit also supplies parts to Airbus and other aircraft manufacturers, making the deal somewhat complex.
