South Carolina's Aniyah Black hits the first-inning grand slam to gain an early advantage in the regional elimination game

South Carolina Softball is traveling against him in its elimination game Utah On Sunday afternoon. With the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, senior Aniyah Black hit a grand slam over the left field fence to give the Gamecocks a 4-0 lead.

Aniyah Black entered the game this season hitting a career-high .289 and boasted five home runs. With the grand slam, Black tied her personal record for home runs in a single season with six, which she set last year.

South Carolina previously defeated Utah 2-1 in the Durham Regional on Friday. The winner of their rematch will face Duke at 3:30 p.m. ET.

This is South Carolina's 24th appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a program. The Gamecocks have made the NCAA Tournament in nine of the last 11 seasons. Entering the tournament, South Carolina had played 23 games against the top 25 RPI teams, the ninth-most in the country.

Additionally, the Gamecocks' final 18 games prior to the tournament all came against top-25 opponents. South Carolina has reached the Women's College World Series only three times in program history, most recently in 1997.

Alabama HC Patrick Murphy records 1,300th Career victory

On Friday, Alabama Softball head coach Patrick Murphy secured his 1,300th with a 1-0 win over him. Career victory USC Upstate in the Crimson Tide's first game of the 2024 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional. Instead of raving about his performance after the game, Murphy praised his players.

“Having two freshmen [pitchers] It was remarkable to see performances like that in their first postseason starts.” Murphy said. “Kudos to [Upstate pitcher Sierra Maness] And Jocelyn Briski. She has done a great job for us this year.

“The postseason is about surviving and moving forward. It doesn't matter if it's 1-0, 8-0 or 10-9 – you just have to score one more run than the other team. USC Upstate made a lot of plays, as did our defense. Briski was great and Bailey Dowling came with the key goal.”

Alabama's pitching was outstanding in Friday's win, allowing just two hits and a walk to USC Upstate while yielding three strikeouts. Briski previously threw 6.1 innings Kayla Biber came in to finish the game.

Alabama's outstanding defense was nothing new. Friday marked the Crimson Tide's 15th shutout win of the season and their third in a tie after 5.0 innings. Jenna Johnson and Bailey Dowling led the way on offense, recording two hits each, their ninth and seventh multi-hit performances of the season, respectively.
