DVIDS – News – Alaska Army National Guard selects top warrior for 2024

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – The Alaska Army National Guard named its top noncommissioned officer and Soldier after a five-day competition that ended May 18 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

Spc. Emmanuel Hansen, a CH-47 helicopter repairman assigned to 1st Battalion, 207th Air Force and Sgt. Brendan White, an infantryman with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment, received the AKANRNG 2024 Enlisted Soldier or Noncommissioned Officer of the Year title.

Spc. Emmanuel Hansen said the competition helped him develop as a soldier.

“Anything we can do to improve is always good,” Hansen said. “You will go far [in the competition] if you want to be here and [you] Keep going.”

The participants were tested in several competitions that tested their mental and physical abilities.

Events included World War II physical fitness tests and target recognition, an obstacle course, land navigation, a 12-mile road march, stress shooting and several other assessments, all scored by senior team leaders who helped plan the events.

Sergeant. Sgt. 1st Class Paul Miller, senior instructor and training officer for the 207th Multifunctional Training Regiment, said these types of competitions are important because they help determine which Soldiers are ready to represent and fight for the state.

“The Best Warrior Competition is great for the Alaska Army National Guard. We get to see which Soldiers are ready and the best in the state to fight for the nation,” Miller said. “This is the toughest competition we’ve had so far.”

Miller also says that hosting events like this shows overall preparedness because the training program is planned six to nine months in advance so that participants and winners can meet standards.

Sergeant. Brendan White, an infantryman with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment, said he was excited to compete alongside his fellow Soldiers and experienced a lot of camaraderie throughout the week.

“It’s great to see this bond building,” White said. “It doesn’t make the days so bad when we can all stick together and be in the moment together.”
