Couple seriously injured after house explodes in Chester County, Pennsylvania

UPPER OXFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) – A Chester County couple is seriously injured after their home burst into flames.

Firefighters said they responded to reports of a house explosion on Limestone Road in Upper Oxford Township around 9 a.m. Sunday. The cause is still being investigated.

John Blank heard the explosion across the street where he lives.

“I was just passing by,” he said.

He watched as his neighbors were flown to Jefferson Hospital, a man and a woman aged 70 and 75. He has known her almost his entire life.

“Neighbors since I was a little kid,” Blank said. “I grew up here and they’ve been here for 30 years.”

The sister of one of the victims lives just two doors away and said it was traumatic to see her brother and sister-in-law's house go up in flames. Blank said it was surreal.

“I just looked over and saw the walls popping out,” Blank said.

Cochranville volunteer firefighters told CBS News that the people of Philadelphia gave up everything they were doing to respond. Together with several other firefighters from neighboring towns, they extinguished the flames and used machinery to destroy the rest of the house.

The couple's family said they were still in shock but hoped the couple would pull through.
