Mosquitoes thrive in warm, humid environments, which is why they become more of a problem in the spring and summer. Mosquitoes are attracted to stagnant water as a breeding ground for laying eggs. These pests reproduce quickly, with mosquito larvae reaching the adult stage within a few days or weeks.

Mosquitoes are not just annoying – they are dangerous. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they are the deadliest animal on earth, causing more than 600,000 malaria-related deaths worldwide each year. Mosquitoes also spread other serious diseases, including West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis and Zika, all of which pose a threat to humans and animals.

“Preventative measures are the best way to reduce the risk posed by mosquitoes,” he said

Frank Meek

, Orkin entomologist. “By getting to the root of the problem, homeowners can reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases to their families and their communities.”

To combat this problem, Orkin partners with the American Red Cross for its annual “Mosquitoes Don't Deserve a Drop” campaign. This initiative helps raise awareness of the health risks associated with mosquitoes while maintaining the country's blood supply. For any mosquito control service purchased between

May 20 to June 30, 2024

Orkin will donate

$25

to the Red Cross, up to

$250,000

. This is the perfect window of time to begin pest control as mosquito activity increases and customers can know that their treatment is helping a larger cause.

Regular treatments are just one way homeowners can ward off mosquitoes around their property. Other tips for preventing mosquito bites include:

  • Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

  • Apply an EPA-registered mosquito repellent that contains products like DEET, picaridin, or IR3535.

  • Eliminate standing water in gutters, potted plants, wading pools and other outdoor items.

  • Refresh the water in pet water bowls and birdbaths regularly to avoid stagnation.
