Texas A&M Women's Tennis wins the program's first national championship over Georgia

STILLWATER, Okla. (KBTX) – The Texas A&M Women's Tennis Team defied the odds all season long en route to its first-ever national championship. The Aggies defeated Georgia 4-1 in the national championship final at Oklahoma State's Greenwood Tennis Center.

The fourth time was the charm for the Aggies. A&M and Georgia have met three times this season, with the Bulldogs winning all three games. But the Aggies prevailed when it counted, taking the doubles point and securing singles wins from Lucciana Perez, Mary Stoiana and Nicole Khirin.

Khirin scored the winning point in the semifinal game against Tennessee and in the final against Georgia.

The Aggies started the season 5-5 but battled back to win the SEC regular season championship. They made it to the conference tournament finals but fell to Georgia before advancing to the NCAA Tournament with 4-0 wins over A&M Corpus Christi and Oklahoma and 4-1 wins over every other opponent (No. 4 North Carolina, No .5) successful were Virginia, No. 16 Tennessee and No. 7 Georgia).

This is Texas A&M Athletics' first national title since winning men's indoor track and field in 2017.


The Aggies open their NCAA individual championships on Monday, with Stoiana, Khirin and Kupres competing in the opening round of singles starting at 9 p.m
