Raleigh police are investigating two shootings, one fatal, near the NC State campus

Raleigh police said Sunday they are investigating two shootings – one fatal – that occurred about an hour apart near NC State University's McKimmon Center.

In each shooting, a male victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The first accident occurred at the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Clanton Street around 11:49 p.m. Saturday. The victim of that shooting, Joris Cooper, 22, later died of his injuries and the death is being investigated as a homicide, police said Sunday afternoon.

Raleigh police responded to the second shooting at 12:50 a.m. Sunday at Sherman Avenue and Gorman Street, an intersection two blocks away. Police initially said the shooting occurred at 1:50 a.m

Sherman Avenue runs parallel to Western Boulevard, a busy thoroughfare lined with restaurants and retail stores.

Police said in a news release: “It is unknown whether the two incidents are related.”

North Carolina State Police are assisting in the investigation into both shootings.

Raleigh police are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to visit the Crimestoppers website at www.p3tips.com/89 for anonymous reporting options or call 919-996-1193.
