What to watch in primary elections in Georgia, Kentucky, Idaho and Oregon

On Tuesday, voters in several states will flock to the polls.

In California's 20th Congressional District, the state's most conservative, two Republicans will face off in a special election to determine who will temporarily fill the seat of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted as House speaker last year and then resigned. The winner will serve until January, when the next Congress is sworn in. Vince Fong, a state lawmaker and former aide to Mr. McCarthy, had a significant lead in the primary. He will face Mike Boudreaux, Tulare County's longtime sheriff. (They will face each other again in the fall in a fight for a full term.)

Georgia, Kentucky, Oregon and Idaho have primary elections today. In Kentucky and Oregon, voters will also participate in the presidential primaries, raising the possibility of protest votes against both President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

Here's what else you should see.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis will face a challenger in the Democratic primary for her position. Her opponent is Christian Wise Smith, a lawyer who came third in the 2020 primary against Ms. Willis and lost in the 2022 Democratic primary for Georgia attorney general.

Scott McAfee, the judge overseeing Mr. Trump's trial in Georgia, is also in a competitive battle with Robert Patillo II, a civil rights lawyer and radio host. A third contestant, Tiffani Johnson, was disqualified and is fighting that decision.

Jamie McLeod-Skinner, a progressive challenger, defeated a moderate seven-term Democratic representative in Oregon's Fifth Congressional District in the 2022 primary election, but ultimately lost by two points to her Republican opponent Lori Chavez-DeRemer – a result that bore contributed to the Republicans gaining a slim majority in the House of Representatives this year.

Now Ms. McLeod-Skinner faces another Democratic challenger, Janelle Bynum, who is backed by Gov. Tina Kotek. Ms. Chavez-DeRemer is unopposed in the Republican primary.

Three Democrats are also vying to succeed Rep. Earl Blumenauer, who is retiring after decades of service in the heavily Democratic Third Congressional District: Susheela Jayapal, a former county commissioner and sister of Rep. Pramila Jayapal, as well as state Rep. Maxine Dexter and a Gresham City Councilman, Eddy Morales.

And in Multnomah County, which includes Portland, progressive District Attorney Mike Schmidt faces a challenge from the prosecutor in his office, Nathan Vasquez, who is waging a tough-on-crime campaign.

Many presidential candidates who have ended their campaigns are still on the ballot in Kentucky, giving voters plenty of opportunity to cast a protest vote against their parties' presumptive nominees — even though Kentucky is by no means a swing state. Mr. Trump will join Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, former Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, former Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Vivek Ramaswamy and Ryan Binkley in the vote. Mr Biden will take part in the vote alongside MPs Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson.
