Undersecretary Fernandez embarks on Michigan trip

Under Secretary Fernandez will travel to Michigan May 28-30 to participate in the Mackinac Policy Conference, the Midwest's premier policy and business gathering, bringing together government and industry leaders to discuss current policy challenges and opportunities in the critical minerals, battery and electric vehicle sectors and their associated supply chains, and to meet with industry and labor representatives in Detroit.

While on Mackinac Island, Under Secretary Fernandez will see firsthand how foreign direct investment in Michigan's critical manufacturing sectors is contributing to the U.S. economy and our transition to sustainable, clean energy thanks to the Anti-Inflation Act's incentives. Under Secretary Fernandez will also meet with Michigan public officials to highlight the Department of State's work in subnational diplomacy, which strengthens relationships between the Department of State and state and local governments.

In Detroit, Under Secretary Fernandez will meet with Michigan-based companies, including visiting General Motors' Technology and Innovation Campus, where he will tour the state-of-the-art design lab. Joined by Special Envoy for International Labor Kelly Fay Rodríguez, Under Secretary Fernandez will also speak with unions such as the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) to discuss the Department's work on critical minerals, supply chain resilience, and emerging technologies, and to identify ways the State Department can strengthen advocacy for foreign companies to promote Michigan's private sector and encourage job creation.
