California has seized more than 5.8 million fentanyl pills since January

The Governor's master plan to address the fentanyl and opioid crisis provides a comprehensive framework for addressing the opioid and fentanyl crisis, including by taking bold steps to support overdose prevention efforts, hold the opioid pharmaceutical industry accountable, combat drug trafficking, and raise awareness of the dangers of opioids, including fentanyl.

Last year, the governor elevated the number of CalGuard soldiers deployed to counter narcotics operations at U.S. ports of entry along the border by about 50%. The CalGuard-supported operations resulted in Record seizure of 62,224 pounds of fentanyl in 2023 – a 1066% increase since 2021. CalGuard’s coordinated drug enforcement efforts in the state are funded in part by a $30 million investment from California to expand CalGuard’s work to prevent drug trafficking by transnational criminal organizations. Fentanyl is primarily smuggled into the country through U.S. citizens.

To support bilateral Cooperation Agreement with China to combat drugs, the governor spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October to combat the cross-border shipment of precursor chemicals used to produce fentanyl.
