FSU softball star Jaysoni Beachum named Freshman of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY – The best freshman in the country wore garnet and gold this season as Jaysoni Beachum became the first Florida State Seminole to win the TUCCI/NFCA Division I Freshman of the Year award on Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. Beachum was selected unanimously and became the first ACC player in league history to win the award.

The Tallahassee native posted the best freshman season in Florida State history, making it into all of Florida State's record books in her first season as a Seminole. Beachum broke freshman records for batting average, RBI and on-base percentage. Her 16 home runs were the second-most home runs by a freshman and the sixth-most all-time by a Florida State player. Beachum scored 66 runs, which was a new FSU freshman record and the fifth-most by a Seminole. The ACC Freshman of the Year was one of only three players in school history to hit 15 or more home runs and record 60 or more RBIs.

Beachum finished the season with a .417 average, the third-highest single-season average in Florida State history. She also made the top 10 single-season list for slugging percentage, as her .743 slugging percentage ranks eighth in FSU history.

Beachum led the Seminoles' explosive offense this season. She led the Noles in batting average, hits, home runs, RBI, total bases and on-base percentage and was second on the team in OPS, runs scored, slugging percentage and walks.

Known for her offensive production, Beachum also continued Florida State's tradition of outstanding defensive performances at the hot corners. Beachum started 61 games as the third baseman for the Seminoles and made only five errors in 164 attempts.

Beachum was selected to the First-Team All-ACC and became only the third true freshman in school history to be selected to the First-Team All-Region. She was also named a First-Team All-American by D1Softball today, a Second-Team All-American by Softball America and Softball America's Freshman of the Year.
