Idaho inmate mistakenly released from prison arrested on Vashon Island

VASHON ISLAND, Washington.An inmate who was accidentally released from Idaho's Kootenai County Jail last week was captured today on Vashon Island after eight days on the run.

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Seattle Police Department, Washington State Department of Corrections and Idaho Department of Corrections arrested Daniel J. Billingsley without incident on May 28 at approximately 2:30 p.m.

After it was learned that Billingsley had left the state, the U.S. Marshals (USMS) Fugitive Task Force from Coeur d'Alene, including the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho Department of Corrections, traveled to Vashon Island early this morning.

After a short ferry ride from Seattle to the island, the task force, with assistance from the USMS Task Force from the Western District of Washington, was able to locate and arrest Billingsley.

An internal investigation has been launched into the circumstances of his erroneous release from prison.

Billingsley was sentenced to serve time in the Idaho Department of Corrections and extradited to Kootenai County to face local charges against the Fish and Game Commission.

He was being held for possession of controlled substances when he was accidentally released, sparking a nationwide manhunt.

According to the Coeur d'Alene/Post Falls Press, “Billingsley has a 17-year criminal history in Kootenai County that includes arrests for drug offenses, burglary, robbery, fraud, assault and domestic violence.”

Billingsley was booked into the King County Jail in Seattle and awaited extradition to northern Idaho.
