Congresswoman Jill Tokuda highlights latest legislative wins for Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Congresswoman Jill Tokuda, serving Hawaii’s Second Congressional District (CD2), is back on the islands after a series of intense sessions in Washington, D.C., where she championed several initiatives for her constituents.

CD2 includes suburban and rural parts of Oahu, the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, Kahoolawe and the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Elected in November 2022 to serve in the 118th Congress, Tokuda serves on the House Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on Armed Services, and the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

In a marathon markup session, Tokuda helped advance the Farm Bill which included several provisions beneficial to Hawaii’s agricultural producers and rural communities.

Among her achievements were measures to adjust Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for rural areas, support tropical specialty crops and increase funding for the Micro-Grants for Food Security Program.

Tokuda also secured significant wins in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), including amendments to support local hiring for military construction projects and eliminate copays for contraception for service members.

She addressed the critical issue of child abuse in military childcare centers, ensuring parents are notified within 24 hours of any incidents.

Addressing concerns about invasive species, Tokuda pushed for a new initiative to combat the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle on military lands in Hawaii. She advocated for improved biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of other invasive species.

Tokuda’s efforts extend to addressing Hawaii’s housing crisis, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The NDAA includes language urging the Department of Defense to consider housing solutions for military families on Maui, in light of the severe housing shortage following last year’s wildfire.

While home for Memorial Day, Tokuda plans to attend various events and meetings on Lanai. Reflecting on the significance of Memorial Day, she emphasizes the importance of honoring those who have sacrificed for the nation.
