Former Cardinals WR criticized for criticizing QB

play

Kyler Murray seems to have had more than enough critics since entering the NFL.

You can obviously add a former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver to the list.

Brice Butler, whose brief time with the Cardinals did not overlap with Murray's, recently criticized the quarterback in a podcast, saying he was “not a real leader.”

“Kyler isn't really getting going anywhere,” Butler said on the Upon Further Review podcast. “Because what people don't really know about Kyler is that he's not really a leader, and people don't really surround themselves with him. That's the thing that people don't really think about; they just see his talent and think, 'Oh, he can go anywhere and outdo himself.' You have to be a leader to be a quarterback.”

Brice Butler: Kyler Murray is the worst quarterback in recent times to be selected first in the NFL Draft

Butler made the comments during a segment evaluating the last 10 NFL quarterbacks selected No. 1 in the NFL Draft.

Interestingly, Butler had Murray, Arizona's No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, ranked 10th on that list.

Butler ranked him behind Cam Newton, Joe Burrow, Andrew Luck, Jared Goff, Trevor Lawrence, Baker Mayfield, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young and Jameis Winston.

In the clip, Butler calls himself an “insider,” but social media quickly raised questions about where he got his inside information about Murray, since the time the two spent in Arizona never overlapped.

Butler was signed by the Cardinals on April 4, 2018. Arizona released him on September 1, 2018, without him ever appearing in a game.

The wide receiver played 69 games in six seasons from 2013 to 2018 for the then Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins.

Criticism of Kyler Murray is not new

Criticism is nothing new for Kyler Murray, even from players.

Just last season, a story circulated of an anonymous teammate claiming the team “created a monster” when it renewed Murray’s contract.

Last season, a sports media star also accused Murray of a lack of responsibility and said of the quarterback: “You have to grow up.”

However, Murray seems to have grown in his leadership role within the team and recently even took many of his teammates on a team-building trip to Oklahoma.

Cardinals teammate Michael Carter recently highlighted Murray's leadership qualities and work ethic this season.

“The more I get to know him, the more I believe he never leaves (the Cardinals' training facility),” Carter told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM of Murray. “I'm in the building right now – I don't think he leaves here. I don't believe it. He's always here. He's the first damn one in. I'm sure he's the last one out.”

He added: “I don't think I've ever told him this, you know, I don't think he knows this … but seeing him here in the building, seeing him always slogging away, that's an example because you know he's the leader of the team and he pushes everyone around him to work harder, including me.”

Carter's comments couldn't be more different from Butler's, could they?
