Frost possible tonight at cold interior parts of Michigan

It’s going to be a chilly Thursday morning for all of us, but a frosty morning for some. Here’s a look at where frost could settle in Thursday morning.

This is not a rarity at this date in May. I also wouldn’t call it extremely cold air. Tomorrow morning’s frost is a fairly normal thing year in and year out here in Michigan. There are two large areas of cold pockets in Michigan: the interior areas of the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan. However, Thursday morning is even showing a slight chance of light frost in the cold, low-lying areas of Michigan’s Thumb.

Here is the National Weather Service’s low temperature forecast for Thursday morning, May 30. An official low temperature of 35 degrees will produce frost. How can that be if freezing is 32 degrees? Remember a couple of things. The official thermometers are 6 feet off the ground. In just those few feet down to the ground the temperature can be a couple of degrees colder. Also if an official thermometer reads 35 degrees there are lower spots that are sitting at 32 degrees.

Look at the map and see where 35 degrees or colder is in the forecast. Much of the Upper Peninsula should have frost with the exception of within a few miles of Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron.

In northern Lower Michigan, look for frost at many inland spots 10 miles away from Lakes Michigan and Huron. Traverse City will probably escape a frost due to being so close to the water. As you go inland, frost will be common over the interior areas of northern Lower Michigan. Interlochen, Fife Lake, Cadillac, Kalkaska, Mancelona, Grayling, Gaylord and inland areas of Charlevoix, Emmet, Cheboygan, Montmorency, Oscoda and Ogemaw Counties will have frost Thursday morning.

Notice the cooler forecast in part of the Thumb. So parts of Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair Counties are forecast to drop into the upper 30s.

But our best computer model for low temperature forecasting the next day actually shows it a little cooler in the southeastern Thumb area. The forecast below shows northeast Lapeer County, southern Sanilac County and western St. Clair County dropping to 35 degrees.

This means light spotty frost is even possible around Sandusky, Marlette, North Branch, Peck and Capac could have some frost.

For the rest of us in Michigan we just get a chilly morning for this time of year, with Thursday morning starting in the low 40s for most of us.

If you are in the areas with frost in the forecast, you should probably cover your garden plants that are out in the open. Any planters or hanging baskets right up at your house should be OK.

We can also see from this morning’s temperatures that the Great Lakes’ waters are warming and keeping shoreline areas warmer.

If you are wondering where the cold air for Thursday morning will come from, look just north of the U.S. border this morning.

We don’t see any more frosty mornings in the near future, so this should be the last frost of the spring.
