Details on Pennsylvania's April gambling revenue

In April, Pennsylvania's gambling revenue reached nearly $505 million, up 6% from a year ago. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board highlighted that these revenues generated about $210 million in tax revenue. This figure was slightly below March's record of $230 million in taxes on $555 million in total revenue, representing a 7.6% growth from March 2023.

In 2024, Pennsylvania saw steady growth in gambling revenue compared to 2023, with increases of 2.7% in January and 9% in February. The state saw significant revenue growth following the expansion of gambling, including sports betting, which has been legal in 38 states since 2018. In April 2024 alone, Pennsylvania's sports betting tax revenue increased 14.5%, totaling $42 million.

The state's total gambling revenues in 2023 were a record $5.7 billion, up 9.3% from 2022, bringing in $2.3 billion in tax revenue. However, some lawmakers are raising concerns about the reliance on gambling revenues and the potential negative impacts, including further expansion of the industry. In addition, the introduction of skill games was controversial, with casino owners opposing them as a threat to their business.
