Connecticut student allegedly attacked classmates with axe

A student at a private boarding school in southern Connecticut was arrested on attempted murder charges after a classmate was seriously injured in an attack with an axe-like weapon, authorities said.

The incident occurred late last week at Oxford Academy in Westbrook, about 25 miles east of New Haven.

State police officers responded to the school around 8:30 p.m. Friday for a report of an “injured male juvenile.” When they arrived at the scene, investigators determined the teenager had been the victim of an assault, Connecticut State Police said in a news release.

The victim was flown to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

After reviewing surveillance camera footage, investigators concluded that another male juvenile had attacked the victim before fleeing the scene on foot.

The families of the two teenagers have been notified. Their names have not been released due to their age, police said.

The Central District Major Crime Squad was called in to help locate the suspect. After a three-day manhunt – which included the use of the State Police drone and several canine units, as well as assistance from local law enforcement – the teenager was arrested without incident.

“The accused youth was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and remains in custody,” police said on Tuesday.

The victim is still in the hospital. On Wednesday morning, police said his condition was stable, CT Insider reported.

Representatives of the Oxford Academy confirmed that two of their students were involved in the incident.

“We understand that events like this can cause fear and anxiety,” said Principal Philip Cocchiola in a statement. “But rest assured that the campus is safe and secure.”

Founded in 1906, the college preparatory boarding school offers “one-on-one instruction in a vibrant, family-oriented community.” According to its website, tuition for the 2024-25 school year is $86,000.
