Florida lawmakers react to hush money conviction – NBC 6 South Florida

Florida state lawmakers reacted quickly to news that former President Donald Trump was found guilty on all counts in his hush money trial in New York on Thursday.

Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio called the ruling “a complete farce that makes a mockery of our legal system” in a post on X.

“A political show trial, conducted by an openly pro-Biden judge whose daughter is making money off the case, a jury drawn from the most liberal district in America, absurd and ridiculous charges, and outrageous jury instructions that guaranteed guilty verdicts,” Rubio continued. “Biden and the deranged Trump left will stop at nothing to stay in power.”

Florida's Republican governor Ron DeSantis also condemned the ruling.

“Today's verdict represents the culmination of a trial that was subjugated to the political will of the players involved: a left-wing prosecutor, a partisan judge, and a jury reflecting one of America's most liberal enclaves – all in an effort to 'get' Donald Trump,” DeSantis wrote on X. “That this case – involving alleged business records violations nearly a decade ago – even went to trial is a testament to the political devaluation of the justice system in places like New York City. This is especially true given that the same district attorney regularly excuses criminal conduct that endangers law-abiding citizens in his jurisdiction.”

DeSantis, who unsuccessfully ran against Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has pledged his support to Trump in recent weeks.

“If the defendant were not Donald Trump, this case would never have gone to trial, the judge would never have made similar rulings, and the jury would never have returned a guilty verdict,” DeSantis wrote Thursday. “In America, the rule of law should be applied dispassionately and impartially, not sacrificed to the political agenda of some sham court.”

Florida's other Republican U.S. Senator, Rick Scott, who was one of several lawmakers attending Trump's trial, also condemned the verdict.

“This was a sham trial and the clearest example of election rigging we have ever seen. I am angry and no American is safe from political persecution by the Democrats,” Scott posted on X. “Joe Biden and the Democratic machine constructed a legal case against Trump to win an election. I went to New York to stand by President Trump and the American voters will stand by him this November.”

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, a Republican from South Florida, also condemned the jury's decision.

“The trial of former President Trump is an obvious and blatant judicial farce and a political witch hunt,” he wrote on X. “This is a direct threat to our democracy. This case should never have seen the light of day.”

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, a Democrat from South Florida, welcomed the conviction.

“Today we saw our justice system in action! No one is above the law, including the four-time impeached, twice impeached, seditionist and now convicted felon, former President Donald Trump,” Wilson said in a statement. “There was no witch hunt, no foul play – just the impartial application of justice that treats everyone equally, regardless of who they are. I applaud the jury for their tireless work in reaching this decision, and President Trump deserves every devastating punishment that comes with his charges of falsifying business records.”

Representative Matt Gaetz, another Florida Republican and Trump ally, posted a short post on X about the ruling.

“This verdict is the corrupt result of a corrupt process, a corrupt judge, and a corrupt prosecutor,” he wrote. “We will stand with President Trump now more than ever to save the country.”
