Discover America's most remote post offices in hidden towns in Montana

Some of America's most isolated towns are in Montana. That means we have some of the most remote post offices in the country. Where are these (often charming) small-town anchors?

I admit, I've never heard of some of these small towns in Montana. Even the Google Street View car didn't bother to drive around and photograph all of the “downtown” areas. For these post offices, we had to make do with satellite images.

The origins of the USPS date back to 1775, when Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General during the Second Continental Congress. He also held a similar position for the colonies of the Kingdom of Great Britain. The Post Office Department was established in 1792 with the passage of the Postal Service Act.

In true American style, the very first “post office” was a bar in Boston called Richard Fairbank's Tavern. It was the first official place to collect mail from overseas in colonial America. But the history of the post office goes a little deeper, into the British North American Postal System:

In 1692, New Jersey Governor Andrew Hamilton appointed postmasters in each of the existing North American colonies. The very first “long-distance route” was between Williamsburg, VA and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Since there was no official post office, the first mail carriers dropped off mail at taverns in the community rather than delivering it directly to a person's address.

While we haven't measured their remoteness down to the mile, we're taking a look at some of the most rural post offices in the state of Montana. (No surprise that there's plenty of open space around these small towns, often just a few miles from the Canadian border!)
