Reactions to Trump’s guilty verdict in hush money trial – NBC Chicago

Reactions are pouring in from across Illinois after former President Donald Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York.

Trump's sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Here is a summary of reactions from the former president, current president and various Illinois officials, as we received them.

Former President Donald Trump:

“It was a disgrace. It was a rigged process by a corrupt judge who had a conflict of interest. It's a rigged process, a disgrace. They wouldn't give us another venue. We were in this district, in this area, at 5% or 6%. It was a rigged, disgraceful process.”

“The real verdict will be made by the people on November 5th. And they know what happened here, and everyone knows what happened here. They have a Soros-backed prosecutor, and in all this we did nothing wrong.

“I am a very innocent man, and that's okay, I'm fighting for our country. I'm fighting for our Constitution. Our whole country is being manipulated right now.

“The Biden administration did this to hurt or harm an opponent, a political opponent. And I think that's just a disgrace. And we're going to keep fighting. We're going to fight to the end and we're going to win because our country has gone to hell.”

“We don't have the same country anymore. We have a divided mess. We are a nation in decline, in serious decline. Millions and millions of people are pouring into our country right now from prisons and mental institutions, terrorists, and they are taking over our country. We have a country that is in big trouble.

“But this was a rigged decision from day one. With a judge who had a conflict of interest and should never have tried this case. Never. And we will fight for our Constitution. This is far from over. Thank you.”

President Joe Biden’s campaign:

“Today in New York we saw that no one is above the law.

“Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his personal gain. But today's verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality. There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box. Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican presidential nominee.

“The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater. He is waging an increasingly insane campaign of revenge and retribution, promising to be a dictator 'from day one' and demanding that our Constitution be 'terminated' so he can regain and keep power. A second Trump term means chaos, the curtailment of Americans' freedoms and the incitement of political violence – and the American people will fight back in November.”

Governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker

“Justice has been done. After standing before a jury of his peers, Donald Trump was exposed for the liar and fraud that he is. Trump circumvented the law to deceive voters, and today the law caught up with him.

“Donald Trump is a racist, a homophobe, a fraudster and a menace to this country. Now he can add another title to his list – felon. But let me be clear: Donald Trump will never live to be 47.”

Don Tracy, Chairman of the Republican Party of Illinois

“Let's call this trial what it really is: a political prosecution of the kind that happens in banana republics, but never before in these United States. Democratic activist investigators and prosecutors have pursued President Trump relentlessly for years. First, they challenged the legitimacy of his 2016 election by falsely reporting Russian collusion. Then they tried to prevent his re-election in 2020 through impeachment proceedings and the Hunter Biden laptop cover-up. Then they prosecuted him and his supporters in an effort to tarnish his legacy and reelect President Biden. This weaponization of the justice system has weakened our country here and in the eyes of the world, and I'm sure President Biden will relish this while he vacations in Delaware while his advisers make important decisions for the country.”

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL 05)

“I have always said that no one is above the law, not even a former president.

“Today the justice system finally caught up with Donald Trump.

“Let us remember that Donald Trump is also accused of several other crimes, including some that have done far more damage to our national security and our democracy. He must be held accountable for every one of his misdeeds.”

“For the sake of the nation, Republicans must abandon Donald Trump as party leader once and for all and help prevent a historic criminal from once again occupying the most powerful office in the world.”

Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL 15)

“The left is trying to tear America apart by erasing our borders, bankrupting us, and ending our impartial legal system. The American people see through these rigged political show trials against President Trump. The left will fail, and we will save America.”
