Nominations open for Michigan Teacher of the Year

MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Nominations are now open for Michigan Teacher of the Year for the 2025-26 school year.

Every year since 1952, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) selects 10 Regional Teachers of the Year through a competitive application process, and one of those teachers are selected as the state’s teacher of the year.

The Michigan Teacher of the Year program honors and recognizes teachers from across the state.

“Michigan schools are fortunate to have so many outstanding teachers. We want to recognize their efforts, encourage their collaboration, and honor their commitment to the children of our great state,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice.

Those who wish to nominate an educator must fill out the online form by Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 11:59 p.m. To be eligible for the award, the nominee must have a valid Michigan teaching certificate, at least five years of teaching experience in the state, and be in good standing with their school or district.

Those who win the Michigan Teacher of the Year have the opportunity to learn about educational initiatives and policies at the state level and can provide input on how to better serve the state’s teachers and students.
