Class of 2025 defensive back keeps Illinois football in the top 5

The Illinois football team is looking to add defensive backfield players for the class of 2025.

Bret Bielema and the Illini coaching staff have done a great job building the 2025 class so far. We have six commitments and critical building blocks for the future of the program.

Two of the six commitments also come from the secondary. Xanai Scott is a safety who should give the Illini solid depth early on. Illinois then has Andre Lovett, the highest-rated recruit in the class so far, at safety. He is a top-800 recruit for the program.

However, Illinois is looking for reinforcements for the defensive backs. We could get this reinforcement in the form of Caden Gordon.

On Friday, Gordon announced on social media that he had narrowed his list down to just five teams. The five programs in his top five included Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, South Florida, Florida State and Illinois.

Gordon would be a solid addition to any of the five teams in his top five. He is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound cornerback from Santaluces Community High School in Florida. He is considered a three-star recruit and is the No. 1114 player in the class of 2025. Gordon is also the No. 96 cornerback in the country and the No. 158 player coming out of Florida.

Currently, 247Sports has Florida State and South Florida rated as “Warm” for Gordon, so they are expected to be in the lead. His only official visit is also scheduled for June 21 at South Florida.

Even though I'm a sub-1000 recruit, I'm impressed with Gordon's scholarship offers, which makes me wonder if the sub-1000 ranking is a bit off.

There's a lot to like about Gordon's game, but what stands out to me the most is his speed. He's someone who can fly down the field and make plays. If he makes a mistake in the secondary, he can make up for it with his speed. With that kind of speed, I can see why he has so many scholarship offers.

I hope Illinois can finally get Gordon. I think he has a chance to be one of those players that is ranked under 1,000 but ends up being drafted into the NFL. That would be a great catch for the program.
