Important area codes in Nevada, South Carolina and Maine

Area codes in various parts of the country on Tuesday could have some bearing on Republicans' chances of gaining ground on Democrats in November and help determine whether an often unpredictable Republican in the House who has angered members of her own party makes it to the general election. Here are some races to keep an eye on:

Republicans will select their Senate candidate to try to defeat the Democratic incumbent Senator Jacky Rosen this autumn.

Rosen's Senate seat is one of the most vulnerable in the country in the closely watched swing state that former President Donald Trump lost in 2016 and 2020. Rosen faces minor opposition in the primaries on Tuesday.

In the Republican race to succeed Rosen, Trump recently endorsed Republican Sam Brown, who finished second in the 2022 Republican Senate primary in Nevada.

Still, Brown faces some competition in his latest primary race, including from Jeff Gunter, who served as U.S. ambassador to Iceland during Trump's presidency.

Rep. Nancy Mace seeks to retain her South Carolina seat despite Republican concerns

Mace, who soon after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol said she had held Trump accountable, has since then contacted the former Presidential candidacy 2024Trump also supports Mace.

However, she faced opposition because she was among eight Republicans who helped oust Kevin McCarthy as Republican Speaker of the House last fall.

Mace is the first of that group to face the ballot box. She faces a challenge in the Republican primary from Catherine Templeton, who served as director of the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation while former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was in office before becoming director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

A political action committee close to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has backed Templeton's campaign, federal campaign finance filings show. In South Carolina, a candidate must receive a majority of votes in that particular race in the primary election to win the primary and avoid a runoff, the South Carolina Elections Commission website says. If they fail to do so, a runoff would be held on June 25.

Conservative MP William Timmons faces a challenge in South Carolina

Elsewhere in South Carolina, Republican Rep. William Timmons is being challenged by fellow Republican Adam Morgan, a state representative who is chairman of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus. Timmons is endorsed by Trump.

Primary elections in the contested Maine district

Maine's 2nd Congressional District is held by Democratic Rep. Jared Golden, long a prime Republican target, and his seat will be closely watched again this fall in a race that could help decide which party wins control of the House in November.

A state representative and former NASCAR driver named Austin Theriault is running for the Republican nomination against Maine House Representative Mike Soboleski.

In the reliably Republican state of North Dakota, Republicans will choose their candidate to succeed current Governor Doug Burgum. The race for the governor's office is between Representative Kelly Armstrong and Burgum's Lieutenant Governor Tammy Miller.

Trump has endorsed Armstrong in this race, while Burgum has endorsed Miller.
