Obituary for Edward Turner – New Britain, CT

Edward “Ned” Jackson Turner of New Britain passed away suddenly at his home last week. Born July 16, 1954, in Bridgeport, he was a first-time graduating class of Corpus Christi Elementary School in Wethersfield. He graduated from South Catholic High School in 1972 and received a bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Connecticut in 1976. After working for several years in newspaper publishing in Texas, he returned to Connecticut, where he received his teaching credential from the Connecticut Department of Higher Education. He earned a dual degree in French from the University of Hartford and then taught Spanish and French in middle and high schools and was an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford. He received his master's degree in counseling with honors from St. Joseph College in 1995 and most recently worked for the State of Connecticut Community Renewal Team. He was a Knight of Columbus, Third Order, and a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Newington, where he sang regularly. He also served as chairman of the Children's Liturgy of the Word program and was an active participant in the Small Community Church program of St. Mary's Church. He was a choir member, volunteer and faithful retreatant at the Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford for many years. He is survived by his mother, Evelyn L. Turner of Wethersfield; his brother, Joseph B. Turner of New London; his sister, Mary T. Baker of Cairo, Egypt; four nieces, Jennifer, Jessica, Julia and Emmaline; a nephew, Allen; and close companions, Stephen A. Casillas and Robert J. Casillas, both of New Britain. He was predeceased by his father, Allen J. Turner. Visitation hours will be 4-6 p.m. TODAY at Rose Hill Funeral Home, Rocky Hill. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Newington, with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rocky Hill.
