PA State Senator Devlin Robinson and homeowners rush to help a FedEx driver who collapsed while delivering a package

A Pennsylvania homeowner and his neighbor, a senator, quickly jumped to action and performed life-saving measures after a FedEx driver collapsed while delivering a package in the resident's front yard last week.

According to Triblive, delivery man Adonis Whitner collapsed “like a stone” last Thursday afternoon in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bridgeville after leaving packages in front of Mark Macala’s home.

“He was unresponsive; he wasn't breathing,” Macala told the outlet. “I did my best to reach emergency personnel and do what I could.”

Footage of the doorbell obtained by WTAE captured the moment the driver fell over and Macala, who was already at the door, rushed to his side.

When Macala, 45, called 911, his neighbor, Pennsylvania Senator Devlin Robinson, had just pulled into his driveway across the street when he noticed trouble.

“I looked down and there was a person lying on the ground in front of his house,” he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “So I just ran over there.”

Robinson turned the worker over and tried to clear his airway while the emergency dispatcher ordered the men to perform CPR on him.

“It was the longest five minutes of my life,” Macala told the newspaper. “You could hear sirens and just hoped they would get there sooner.”

First responders helped Whitner on the front lawn for 30 minutes before they were asked to help lift the man onto a stretcher.

Macala just happened to be at home to meet with his contractor. He usually goes to the office to work. And Robinson had just spontaneously dropped by his house.

“Thank the Lord [Robinson came over],” Macala told Triblive. “He was able to help the guy get his breath back; they were very dramatic, labored breaths.”

According to the Post-Gazette, FedEx thanked both men for their “quick action to come to the aid of our team member.”

Whitner is conscious but his recovery from cardiac arrest is expected to be lengthy, the owner of a FedEx service provider said in a GoFundMe post.

Whitner has been working as a supplier for 13 years.

“He is friendly, completely professional and our most experienced delivery driver. In his private life he has a passion for cars and airplanes and even has a pilot's license,” the post says.
