Arizona Cardinals rivals named as NFL offseason losers

ARIZONA – The NFC West should once again be one of the more interesting divisions in the NFL.

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to defend their title as NFC champions after narrowly losing the Super Bowl, while the Los Angeles Rams are hoping to make another postseason appearance. Other franchises like the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals were underdogs for 2023, but fans are confident that could change next season.

Like other divisions, the NFC West has seen a lot of players come and go in recent months, but one media outlet believes a Cardinals rival was the big loser during the offseason.

“After a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the 49ers had a relatively quiet offseason, giving Christian McCaffrey a contract extension and drafting wide receiver Ricky Pearsall from Florida, who may not be ready for prime time until 2025,” wrote Mike Jones of The Athletic.

“The offensive line could have used some reinforcements, but John Lynch hasn't made any significant additions. Perhaps the most notable departure was that of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, whose philosophies never quite aligned with Kyle Shanahan's. Can first-year defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen revitalize a defense that lost Armstead and Javon Kinlaw and added Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos and Jordan Elliott?”

Not mentioned was the looming contract status of Brandon Aiyuk, whose contract has not yet been renewed or traded. It seems his saga could drag on throughout the summer.

The 49ers are still a well-oiled machine, with or without Aiyuk, and should be fine, although you can't say they got significantly better in the offseason, while the other three NFC West teams appear to have made progress.
