Tornado, other severe storm outcomes increased greatly over Michigan today

A very stormy pattern will move over Michigan today. The severe weather forecasts now show a significant chance of severe thunderstorms.

Here are the latest risks of the various types of severe weather.

The yellow area has the highest chance of severe thunderstorms this afternoon through tonight. Most of southern Lower Michigan is in the 15 percent to 29 percent of severe weather.

The atmosphere is such that tornadoes could develop in the strip across central and part of southern Lower Michigan. Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Alma, Mount Pleasant and Flint are in the highest risk area for a few tornadoes.

Here’s the radar forecast showing the large area of thunderstorms that will gradually move through all of Michigan today and tonight.

As of this morning, the thunderstorms will come in two waves. One wave late morning into afternoon and another round tonight.

Any of these thunderstorms could produce spurts of severe weather with damaging wind gusts, large hail and even isolated tornadoes.
