Why New Jersey is one of America's best tennis states

Tennis is one of the most popular individual sports in the world and has grown in popularity in the United States in recent years. Like golf, tennis is a great outdoor activity to play with friends or competitively.

Following the COVID-19 lockdowns, people looked for activities that allowed them to “socially distance.” Combine this reality with the rise in sports betting in recent years, and people are paying more attention to tennis on television as well.

Two of the most important tennis tournaments take place in the summer: Wimbledon on grass courts in England and the US Open on hard courts in New York City. has created a data point system to determine which states are best for playing tennis, taking the following criteria into account:

-Number of tennis courts and clubs in relation to the population of the state
-Costs for renting a tennis court to play
-Number of training camps and tennis programs
-Number of competition tournaments

Where does New Jersey rank in tennis in America?

Based on combining all the data points, has created rankings based on total scores and New Jersey is the fifth best state for tennis fans and players.

According to the points system, New Jersey has the best competitive tennis tournaments in the United States and the sixth best value for tennis court/club use in the entire state.

What hurt New Jersey's overall tennis rankings was that the city ranked in the bottom third of the United States in terms of facilities, with far fewer tennis courts and clubs open to the public compared to neighboring states like Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Delaware is the top-ranked tennis state in America for tennis players and fans. Thanks to high scores for facilities per capita, value of tennis courts, and club costs, Delaware also received the best scores for availability of tennis instruction and coaching.

We should note that there are places in South Jersey where tennis courts used to be that have now been replaced by pickleball courts, a game that is a variation of tennis. So, one could argue that the rapid growth of pickleball in the United States has made it an alternative for people who want to play a game with less running and lateral movements compared to tennis.
