Derrick Olsen from Helena misses the semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles at the Olympic qualification

EUGENE, Ore. – Derrick Olsen, a graduate of Helena High and Montana State University, failed to qualify for the semifinals in the men's 110-meter hurdles during the U.S. Olympic team track and field qualifying heats at Hayward Field on Monday.

Running in the third of four heats on lane five, Olsen posted a time of 13.97 seconds, placing him eighth in the race and 31st overall. The top six from each heat, plus the next three fastest times, qualified for the semifinals, which will be held on Thursday.

Grant Holloway, the silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was the overall winner with a time of 12.92. His Adidas colleague Trey Cunningham won the third run with a time of 13.12, taking third place overall.

Olsen is a member of the Phoenix Track Club. He graduated from Helena High in 2017 and participated in the Montana State track and field program from 2018-2022.
